One morning while I was roaming down a narrow path in the nearby forest, I came upon a little pebble, which looked back at me with a smile, and asked my name. I looked back in a startled sort of way and I started to say my name; suddenly a total blank came over me; I couldn't remember who I was.
Everything went silent as the little pebble began to speak; "I want to take you on a short story that was written long ago when all the land was peaceful and free; when the birds sang their sweet songs, and the fresh smell of morning dew felt like you were alive. When I was looked upon as a wonder of life, not tossed away as a meaningless object. I used to sit amoung the greatest of all things, and with the smallest of wonders. Where all was important and all had a place in life.
It began as a wonderful life until the mechanical robots came. A few at first, then more and more came. The more they came, the smarter they were. They began controlling everything. Nothing was done without them. Eventually they controlled our very lives. They cleared out the forests so they could build their control units; stuffed them full of people and called it convenience , an easier way of living.
Many of us fled or were discarded along the way, but they followed. Soon there will be nothing left. I am but a lowly pebble, one of the few that are left, but I will perish like all the rest.
Sit down beside me now, and close your eyes. Let your mind drift slowly away. Away to an early morning smell of moss on the forest floor; the damp warmth of the dew as it forms on the delicate leaf; and hear the beautiful enchanting birds sing their morning song.
Nothing but peace surrounds you; it engulfs your whole being. The calmn bliss you feel as you float across the crystal blue sky and bounce off the soft white clouds on your way. The way that takes you to the very ends of the universe.Laughter of green and feelings of happiness flow through your body as you approach your destination.
Nature's beautiful blanket of fresh green grass comforts the soles of your feet as you slowly touch the ground. The sound of a light rain bounces off a tiny brook. You watch the animals chase butterflies as they play."
Echoed sounds of machines break the peace and send me back to reality.
I look to the ground and see nothing but concrete. The little pebble no longer smiles, and I understand why. I pick up the little pebble and put it in my pocket to give it a place in life and a reminder of the day I fell off the earth.
